Math Problems

Hi all!! Wish you a very happy n fulfilling new year.

And what better way to start off than proposing a couple of Math problems to you young minds? :P
I came across these problems a few days ago, and I'd urge u ppl to try them out n post the answers.

1. Find the no. of integral points bounded by |x+y|=17, the x-axis and the y-axis. (By integral points, we mean (x,y), s.t. x,y are integers.)

2. Find the number of numbers between 10^9 and 10^10, s.t. the product of their digits is 4.
Answers would be posted in a week.

One Semester Into the Freshie Year..

The calendar now flips over to the last week of October. The gloomiest period of the end-sems would soon set in.
As for the freshman, this would mark the end of their first semester at IIT. As most of you would agree, it was a journey with unpredictable jerks and throttles. From watching contemporary music maestros perform live on stage, to getting to use complicated instruments in the laboratory for the very first time, to experiencing how hostel life can be (am excluding the Kota junta), it has been for our predecessors and will always be.. the most amusing part of your stay at IIT.

There's another lot of nerdos busy preparing for the JEE next year. 5-odd months remain to finesse up your preparations. Revisit the loopholes in your conceptual understanding of subjects. Solve as many problems as possible, with a constraint on time. If possible, join a nationwide test series (possibly FIITJEE or CAREER POINT, being the better ones, as far as I believe).
Happy preparations!

IIT Freshies..

Ya.. so the time has come. After all the hard work that you have done.. right from the preparatory stage to the JEE, the results and the counseling, its time to relish the fruits. Welcome to IIT.

You have already been allotted the IIT that you have been admitted into. And in a few days, you will register yourself at your IIT. New environment. New people. Life that you have never lived, well probably. :P... the Hostel Life.
The Hostel Life is probably the most interesting part of being in a college. You are totally up to yourself. You will discover soon that night sets in hostels at the break of dawn. Your all-so-punctual schedule goes down the drain. All you need now is food, water and LAN... :)

Post JEE Results

Finally... the awaited results are out! Hearty congos to all who've come out with flying colours. The Merit List was topped by Anumula Jithendar Reddy from the Chennai Zone. In all, 13k odd students made it thro' to the Merit List.
Now a bigger challenge faces the qualifiers... COUNSELLING!
Counselling is a process, which allows the students to cast their choices of stream and/or institute. This year, the process is an online one, for the first time in the history of IIT. Rest assured, the bottomline remains the same.."Better the rank, more the choices you get."
Going by last years' opening and closing ranks, IIT Bombay Computer Science and Engineering opens (and closes) at the beginning. You can get a detailed list of the Opening and Closing Ranks in JEE 2009 in the IIT websites or in the Counselling Brochures that you would ideally be receiving.
In addition to the 7 old IITs: Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee, seats will also be allotted to the 8 new IITs : Ropar, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Jodhpur, Mandi and Indore and ISMU Dhanbad and IT-BHU.
Last year, in 2009, 69 people out of the top 100 AIR opted for IIT Bombay, which seems to be the favourite among toppers.
Please opt for the branch that interests you, and not the one that "others" suggest you to.
And feel free to drop in your queries. :)

Paradise Institute: Students Beware...

An IIT-JEE coaching institute in Patna, Paradise Institute is a prime center of forgery, aimed at cheating young IIT aspirants. It publishes ads in Arihant's Spectrum and MTG's Mathematics Today, promising huge prize moneys if you happen to be a student in any form of the institute. This is what it looks like..
AIR 1 : Rs. 5,00,000
AIR 2-10 : Rs. 4,00,000
AIR 11- 100 : Rs. 3,00,000
AIR 101-500 : Rs. 2,00,000
AIR 501-1000 : Rs. 1,00,000..
and so on..

I got an AIR of 968, and had been a correspondence student for one year. Accordingly, I was supposed to get a merit award of Rs. 1 lakh. But as hard as I tried, it was all in vain as they did not respond at all in its favour. They kept on twisting and turning dates, like they do every year, with every student of theirs. And what was more, they have had guts to publish an identical advertisement this year too.

Guys and girls, DO NOT fall in the trap. Join hands to fight against such social evils, who repeatedly make a fool of us students, YEAR AFTER YEAR. Get these criminals behind bars...

Now that JEE is over..

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) was conducted at 1,026 centres across the country on Sunday, the 11th of April as nearly 4.72 lakhs students attempted the examination for nearly 8000 seats in the IITs, IT BHU and ISM Dhanbad. The exam spanned a six hour duration (0900-1200 hrs and 1400-1700 hrs). It consisted of 2 papers each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The pattern was not very different from JEE 2009. It did not see the return of assertion-reason type questions, but the paper retained subjective questions and matrix-matching types.

Overall, the paper was simpler than JEE 2009. The level of difficulty was greatly decreased and there were partial markings which were introduced. Physics was the easiest, followed by Chemistry. Mathematics was tough as usual.

5. BANSAL CLASSES SOLUTIONS TO IIT-JEE 2010

About the cut-offs, the overall cut-off might well be around 210, going by the relative simplicity of the paper. The subject-wise cut-off for Physics and Chemistry should definitely increase.
The cut-off for 500 and 1000 AIR is expected to be about 335 and 310 respectively, though a better estimate would be available only after a week or so.

Post in your expected score and doubts...

Now...It's your turn to ask...

Getting into IIT was a dream come true for me. Faith in oneself and persistence are almost the two ideals that take you through. There might be phases in your life, wherein you might feel dejected and want to give up. Very frankly, such phases did come up during my preparatory years. You might feel that crossing the hurdle is way too difficult, going by the rate of intake. But remember that every year 5000-odd students do qualify. Possibly the basic difference between a person who qualifies JEE and one who does not is the lack of persistence. Believe in yourself, and in your capabilities, and this can work up miracles.
The day the JEE results were supposed to be declared, I was, like the other 4 lakh students, extremely tensed. On the morning of the 25th of May, I went to a friend's house. He had an internet connection at his residence. The results were to be declared at 8:00 a.m. Unfortunately, the connection was slow, and till quarter to nine, I was kept guessing. The results were out 45 mins ago,and I was still unaware of my fate. Suddenly, the IIT Kanpur website responded, and asked me to type in my roll number. With numb, cold hands, I entered it. After what seemed like an eternity, the result was displayed, and Kudos! I was through. I was all smiles, and tears of happiness rolled down my cheeks. I clasped my friend, who was already busy canvassing my success. The world suddenly seemed void of all evils. I called up home, and my brother shouted out so loud on phone, that it nearly damaged my eardrums. On my way back home, I started reflecting upon the work that I had put in to achieve what I'd achieved today. The persuasion by my mother to study, and not to loaf around the entire day, my study room, which was more of a library, the sleepless nights I'd spent, the day before the JEE, the JEE day itself. All the pain that I'd endured seemed justifiable at this moment.

Guys and girls who are aspiring to appear for the IIT-JEE in 2010 or thereafter are invited to use this forum to post in all the queries that you have regarding JEE. I'd try to respond as quickly as possible to your questions, i.e. within 12 hours.
Share your experience.
Remember that this is your life...make it HAPPEN.
